Heidi the Hedgehog

Heidi, newest addition to my Forest Friends collection and nibbler of flowers.

Materials:

Handknit cotton in beige and brown
Safety buttons in 6mm (2 pieces for eyes) and 9mm (1 piece for nose)
4mm crochet needle
Polyfilling
Tapesty needle

Pattern for the head:

Do not slip stitch at the end of rounds. Continue working as if in a spiral. Place a waste yarn of contrasting colour at the start of each round to help you with tracking your stitch count. Start with beige yarn.

Row 1: Start with a magic ring. 4 sc. Close the ring but not too tightly that you will find it difficult to stick the 9mm safety button nose into the tip.

Row 2: 3 sc, sc-inc in the last stitch = 5 st

Row 3: 4 sc, sc-inc in the last stitch = 6 st

Row 4: [1 sc, 1 sc, sc-inc] x 2 = 8 st

Row 5: 8 sc = 8 st

Row 6: [1 sc, sc-inc] x 4 = 12 st

Row 7: [1 sc , sc-inc] x 6 = 18 st

Row 8: 18 sc = 18 st

Push safety buttons for eyes and nose through respective positions.

Pattern for the body:

Switch to brown yarn for body.

Row 1: [2-hdc cluster] x 18 = 18 st

Row 2: [2-hdc cluster] x 18 = 18 st

Row 3: [2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster increase] x 6 = 24 st

Row 4: [2-hdc cluster] x 24 = 24 st

Row 5: [2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster increase] x 6 = 30 st

Row 6: [2-hdc cluster] x 30 = 30 st

Row 7: [2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster decrease] x 6 = 24 st

Row 8: [2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster decrease] x 6 = 18 st

Row 9: [2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster decrease] x 6 = 12 st

Row 10: [2-hdc cluster, 2-hdc cluster, make a 2-hdc cluster decrease] x 3 = 9 st

Fasten. Stuff with filling. Thread yarn end in tapestry needle and weave through centre of the ‘v’ of each remaining 9 stitches, pull to close the hole. Weave end and trim off.

Note:
[2-hdc cluster] = Yo, hook through, y0, hook out (3 loops on hook at this point), yo, hook through same stitch, yo, hook out (5 loops on hook at this point), yo and pull through all 5 loops on hook.

[2-hdc cluster decrease] = Yo, hook through, yo, hook out [3 loops on hook at this point), yo, hook through the NEXT stitch, yo, hook out (5 loops on hook at this point), yo and pull through all 5 loops on hook. You’ve decreased 2 to 1 stitch!
